Salem Theatre Company celebrates new space with festival

To celebrate the opening of its new downtown performance space, the Salem Theatre Company is presenting a three-weekend festival of comedy, theater, and music beginning this weekend.

“Moving the company to a permanent theater at 90 Lafayette St. is a game-changing move for us, so we needed to change our plan and adapt season seven to best suit our new performance space,’’ said John Fogle, the company’s artistic director.

Good pub fare with an emphasis on friendly service

Bar favorites like nachos, wings, and burgers seem like standard fare for a restaurant featuring booths with private televisions, as if the larger ones lining the wall overhead aren’t enough. In the case of Tavern in the Square in Salem, however, you may miss out if you limit yourself to old favorites.

Open for just over six months, the restaurant has locations of the same name in Cambridge’s Central and Porter squares. While sports are taken seriously at all three self-billed neighborhood restaurants and bars, so is customer service.

At long last, a place to call home

The Salem Theatre Company has been looking for a home virtually since its founding in 2002. It has been seriously looking for a couple of years. The search grew almost desperate last fall when Executive Director Gary LaParl couldn't find any place in Salem to stage next year's plays — not a meeting room, not even a church basement. It got so bad that he considered taking the whole season on the road to Marblehead and Lynn.

The search, and anxiety, ended last Wednesday night when the Salem Theatre Co. board of directors signed a two-year lease for 90 Lafayette St., a former auto repair business that once housed Dracula's Castle, a haunted house.

No Sign of Salem Eatery Boom Slowing

"I think Salem is really vying to be the top dining destination on the North Shore," said Matt Picarsic, a principal of RCG, the Somerville developer that rents space to more than a half-dozen restaurants that have opened in the past decade.

Salem's Chulamama expands with New Danvers Store

In 2007, Heather Roman and Noelle Moreno opened Chulamama, a designer maternity clothing store in Salem. Roman and Moreno, both mothers of two, felt there was very little for the pregnant, fashionable woman who didn't live in a big city.

"We met at a play group with our oldest children. We are both into fashion and style and spoke about how there are no options for maternity. There was no place to buy (designer maternity clothes) outside of New York City, and there are all of these moms north of Boston who want to feel like themselves and dress like themselves."

Tavern Opens its Doors for Thanksgiving

One of the city's newest and, on occasion, most controversial restaurants is staying open Thanksgiving Day to serve free turkey dinners to anybody who walks through the door.
The Thanksgiving dinner, which will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. (doors open at 11 a.m.), is for the elderly, the homeless, anyone who is alone, and anybody and everybody, Morris said.

Construction has Begun at Cadence Point Development

Construction is underway at Cadence Point, the first large subdivision development to be permitted in Brevard under the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO).
"We are extremely pleases with our progress and interest in the development, especially given the current challenges facing the real estate and construction industry," said Cadence Point's developer, Nick Bayne, a native of Brevard and a partner with RCG.

Former News Building Opens as Apartments, Tavern

City leaders yesterday praised RCG for sticking with this project and persevering through a tough economy.
"Even in a down economy, there are people who want to live in the downtown," said Alex Steinbergh, a principal of RCG. "In our view, Salem has been outperforming most of the local cities in this recession."

RCG CEO Named Salem Chamber's Businessman of the Year

Awards for businessman and businesswoman of the year went to Matt Picarsic, a principal of RCG, and Wendi Goldsmith, founder of The Bioengineering Group.
Picarsic's firm, meanwhile, has been busy rebuilding Salem. RCG converted the former Salem Laundry building into Derby Lofts condominiums, purchased the Peabody Block and other downtown properties, and is finishing up the retail and residential redevelopment of the former Salem Evening News site. The Somerville developer is so active here that it opened a downtown Salem office.

Chamber announces nominations for Celebrate Salem Awards

Now that it's officially spring, it's time for another annual milestone: the Chamber of Commerce's Celebrate Salem Awards, which will be presented on Wednesday, April 29.
RCG's Principal and Chief Executive Office Matt Picarsic has been nominated for businessman of the year, while five RCG tenant received nominations in a variety of categories.
