In tight local market, no relief for renters, apartment hunters

Rents in the Boston area hit record highs in the last quarter of 2011, pushed up by increased demand and declining inventory, maintaining the region’s reputation as one of the country’s most expensive places to live.

Locally, rental prices have been climbing for almost two years, despite a slumbering housing market. Many people have chosen to stay in apartments rather than buy during the downturn, while others have been forced to rent because of unemployment or uncertainty about their job status, housing analysts say. Even with a recent burst in construction of rental housing, economists expect monthly rents to keep increasing for several years.

Lynn women create cutting-edge bags from recycled newspapers

While her idea was not adopted by the Fairmont, it evolved into a vision to make bags - pocketbooks, wallets, totes - from recycled newspapers, with their original content incorporated in the design. Couture Planet was born.

What started with Carman working odd hours in the attic of her home has expanded to Couture Planet’s office and manufacturing space at the Lydia Pinkham Building in downtown Lynn. Carman still works for the Fairmont, while squeezing in hours for Couture Planet.

Frozen yogurt shop will replace Segway company in Salem

The retail space at the corner of Lafayette and New Derby streets is trading Segways for frozen yogurt. An Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt franchise will begin renovation at 76 Lafayette St. this month, with a goal of opening in early March.

The building is managed by RCG properties, and Orange Leaf's new space is roughly 2,700 square feet, said Alex Schnip, who manages RCG's Salem portfolio.
"(Orange Leaf) is going to be a great addition for that corner," Schnip said.

Salem tree lighting kicks off holiday season

The season will kick off with a downtown tree lighting with Mayor Driscoll Friday, November 25 at 6:30 p.m. This over 20’ tree is a donation by Salem Main Streets, Benjamin Nutter Architect, LLC and Meeting House Church. It will be placed in the visible location of Lappin Park at the corner of Essex and Washington St. behind the Samantha statue. The City of Salem, Downtown Businesses, RCG are also contributing to make this event possible.

Making It At The Mill

Last month, BeyondTrust Software moved from New Hampshire into 11,000 square feet of office space in East Mill, one half of the former Davis & Furber Machine Shop.
The new tenant brings the refurbished North Andover mill up to 93 percent occupancy, from about 20 percent when owner RCG LLC, of Somerville, bought the property in 2007.

[David] Steinbergh said the East Mill offers tenants more than a traditional suburban office, with different amenities, a downtown location, and an interesting and historic building. Attracting broad tenants, he said, was always part of the plan.

Property a Hot Commodity in Downtown Salem

In a summer of debt-ceiling debacles and stock-market plunges, the downtown Salem economy remains a relatively good story.
The old firehouse on Church Street, which has been the home of Ted Cole's Music Shop for decades, was bought for $570,000 by an affiliate of RCG, the largest downtown developer. Cole's family, which is closing the business, owned the building.
RCG has no "grandiose" plans for the Church Street building, according to Matt Picarsic, a principal at the Somerville-based developer.

Starting at the beginning of September, residents and visitors can check out one of 26 bikes from two locations thanks to a $25,000 state Green Communities grant.

Three of the abstract sculptures, the city's first significant venture into public art in recent years, were installed on the Essex Street pedestrian mall and the fourth at the corner of Washington and Front streets. They will stay up until November.

This is not a one-time happening, Daniel said, but the beginning of a public art program in the downtown. During a series of workshops this winter on the future of the pedestrian mall, the same subject kept coming up.

The “Pathways to the Past” walking tours of Machine Shop Village will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Saturday, June 18, and will include stops inside the old D&F complex, now called East Mill, as well as more than a dozen period houses, shops and the Trinitarian Congregational Church on Elm Street.

Rand and Carol Majahad, the director of the North Andover Historical Society, will give two guided tours of East Mill at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. East Mill is now home to 27 companies ranging from a law office and yoga studio to a solar energy supplier and art studios, three restaurants, and 31 residential apartments.
